You wouldn’t believe how energetic the people of Malaysia are at night. The destinations one can go to once the sun has set is limitless: pubs, clubs, specialty cafes, restaurants, and even sky-high rooftops. However, there’s been a trend that isn’t exactly new but has taken the interest of a new wave of night owls: speakeasy bars.

Speakeasy bars are basically underground drinking establishment that aren’t exactly easy to find. Most of these places don’t even have signs to tell you where they are, only those adventurous enough in the city are able to stumble into them. On your next trip here, you won’t just have to look for hotels in Petaling Jaya, you will also have to bring this list of speakeasy bars with you and experience a unique late night escapade.

Mr. Brooks

This place is easier to spot compared to other speakeasy bars, but Mr. Brooks still offers one of the most intimate and discreet places to hang out in. Located on the third floor of Bangsar Shopping Centre, Mr. Brooks is a gin and cocktail bar decorated like a British gentlemen’s club. Look for a makeshift garage with a purple Sunbeam Alpine Car parked inside. Find the tools panel on the wall, push through, and the entrance will be revealed to you.

Blue Elephant Bar

Found in Damansara, Petaling Jaya is the Blue Elephant Bar. It’s relatively new, so if you’re tired of overcrowded bars, this is the best place for you. Their interior takes inspiration from Hollywood with its stylish and glitzy design and portraits of iconic actors. To find it, you need to look for a doorway advertising the SCSG Corporate Service, the one with a blue light shining on the pavement. From there you will see posters lining the walls of a red-carpeted staircase; this will lead you to Blue Elephant Bar.

Whisky, Tango and Foxtrot Bar

Despite its hilarious acronym, Whisky, Tango and Foxtrot Bar offers a sophisticated ambiance and an extensive array of imported liquor and premium cigars (ones from Cuba, Nicaragua, and Cameroon). It can be found within Avenue K, next to Suria KLCC. You will need to find a narrow London telephone booth in the Samba Brazilian Steakhouse. The bar is furnished with dark-coloured chairs and tables and has big cabinets filled with different kinds of liquor, from Scottish malts to Japanese whiskies.

Tate Bar

If you’re looking for more than just sophistication, then you should definitely drop by classy Tate Bar. It has one of the most hard-to-find entrances, so you will have to keep your eyes peeled for this one. To find it, go to Intermark KL and head to the south side of the ground floor. You will need to look for a glossy wall with a light fixture shaped like a small top hat. Give the door a push and walk along its dimly lit corridors; there, you will be greeted by a suit of armour. Tate Bar gives off an exclusive gentleman’s club vibe, but rest assured that it is open to everyone.

So once you’ve dropped your bags in any of the Petaling Jaya hotels like The Royale BIntang The Curve, head on out to one of these speakeasy bars and have the time of your life.
