Mount Samat is one of the most visited tourist spots in Bataan, Philippines. It is a mountain in the town of Pilar which stands 1,787 feet above sea level.
At the top of the mountain is a gigantic cross called the Dambana ng Kagitigan (literally translated as the Shrine of Valor) or the Mount Samat National Shrine. It was erected to honor the fallen Filipino and American soldiers during World War II on its 25th anniversary.
The climb to the peak of Mount Samat is short and takes around 30 minutes to an hour. The slope is gentle and the path is paved with stones and properly fenced. Beginners and experts alike will find it an easy hike.
The first thing you will see is the Colonnade. The Colonnade is a marble structure built in 1970. One can admire the beautiful mosaic artworks of Cenon Rivera on the walls, or the huge sculptures outside created by National Artist Napoleon Abueva.
From the Colonnade, there are 14 flights of stairs to the Dambana ng Kagitingan.
Once at the top, you can see a breathtaking view of Bataan from the Colonnade at the National Shrine. You may also see Corregidor Island and even Metro Manila far off if the skies are clear.
During the Catholic Lenten season, hundreds of Filipinos travel to Mount Samat to do the 12 Stations of the Cross. The pilgrimage ends at the Dambana ng Kagitingan, where people pray, admire the view, and take photos of the scenery.
